bits and bobbins

told you so.

from nylon magazine dot com:

told you so.

see, i’m not the only one who’s convinced that acid wash just may be back… :)
besides pondering the return of acid wash (TOLD YOU!), i’ve been doing some thinking about other old things that be due for a resurgence:

-shoe clips
-clip-on earrings
-grandma shoes
-leotards
-jumpsuits
-overalls
-circle skirts
-rompers
-bonnets
-berets
-suspenders

yes, some are already coming around again…

tell me: what do YOU think is poised for a comeback, or something that is currently flying under the radar and should or could come back that hasn’t already done so?

and a random addendum:

alison kelly

pete and i saw alison kelly of project runway 3 walking down prince street near broadway, heading west earlier this afternoon.

many disagree with me, but personally, i really liked her. i felt she had amazing personal style and was, in my somewhat (?) educated opinion, shafted. the whole show is going to hell in a drama-filled handbasket. boo on bravo for making the show kinda suck. they better not oust michael now, damn it. i wish i could say i won’t watch anymore, but ugh, you know i will. :P
anyway, it was random, interesting.

damn, i’m going to miss living in NYC. :(

  1. well i am going to make a pinstripe acid wash purse just because!

and this is really obscure but i used to collect [as did everyone girl in my class] B&D plastic barrettes. i have looked everywhere on the internet for them. i think they were german. and they were on the tasteful side of of 80s. in all the colours of the rainbow but sort of muted tones. the designs were amazing. i want these to come back!

  2. berets were out? damn. i’m so unfashionable.

yesterday i bought an old woman’s polynesian huge smock shirt to wear as a very short dress with black tights.

i also really like folky aprony dresses, but fitted.

also i never read fashion magazines, i should probably start once i move to vermont. boo.

i’d like to see 40’s/80’s style peplum jackets, blade-runner-style back, but it’s probably not going to happen soon. unless it did and i missed it.

i was shocked that no one bought the super 80s leotard i had on ebay, it’s amazing! and i agree with overalls, suspenders, acid wash, jumpsuits, grandma shoes. well, for me personally. i dont disagree with you on the others!

  3. Not too long ago I bought suspenders that I wore to work. Oh, how I was teased (even though I bought them from the store)– coworkers snapped them, made Mork & Mindy jokes.. but I loved them.

I’m ready for chunky tights, textured tights, instead of just footless ones. Layer with knee socks, and boots or heels. Lately I’ve been jonesing for an accordian pleated knee-length skirt. Apparently they were all the rage seven years ago, but I’m having a wicked time trying to find one now (even on ebay…).

  4. Thank goodness I just scored some grandma shoes while thrifting!
I had an honest-to-goodness flashback whilst at the mall today - I actually saw some of the exact same striped v-neck sweaters I tried on as an awkward 12-year-old. It’s funny, I had thought about buying one before that flashback, and now they kinda scare me. I have such negative feelings about my self-image back then that certain 80s clothes will totally send me back. Weird!

I also think those jeans with colorful printed patterns (florals, what have you), and pinstripes are due back. I am also still waiting for those neon mesh headband scarves to show up any day now…

  5. tamera:

hahah, blade runner style: awesome. love it. :P

folk dresses: meaning, like european folk costume type of thing? i’d love to see what you mean, do you have imagery?

i wouldn’t say berets were “out” per se, but i remember other shapes of hats being more popular the past couple years (beanies, cloches, etc.)

i’ve also been really facinated by middle eastern and african tunic shirts lately. i keep picking them up at thrift stores lately…

  6. yes, exactly, folk costume stuff. i got a dress at thrift town but havent had a chance to wear it - i will soon and wardrobe remix it!

    i have a dashiki pattern! they’re comfy.

  7. for some reason i got an urban outfitters catalog in the mail. i’m not all the way through it yet, but i saw both suspenders and overalls…

  8. me and my boyfriend and his mom were all mad that alison got kicked off too. we’re with you!

  9. I agree that grandma shoes are in. Especially if you go and funkify them. Glad I’m not the only one!

  10. I love clip on earrings, always have. Even though I got my ears pierced at 18 months old. Didn’t Marc Jacobs have pastel leotards in his spring collection? I thought it would be entirely to cool to catch on. I favor jumpers over overalls; probably because my mom dressed me in overalls all the time (she calls them bibbies). Coveralls maintain a steady low profile in hip-hop style. I’ve been jonesing for some suspenders for years though they really wouldn’t suit me. I think I’m just a menswear fan.

I remember refusing to wear any of the second hand acid wash jeans my mom handed me during the middle school years. Then I saw some kid wearing them last year (my first year of college) and didn’t think they were so bad. I really don’t think that kid specifically picked them out for style, though.

  11. I was looking through nylon yesterday at the bookstore and saw that article!!
Acid was is pretty awesome but I don’t know if I could ever work it…:0

  12. i really liked her too. i was kinda upset that they got rid of her and not vincent.. he has sucked every time

  13. I wasn’t old enough to really remember acid wash jeans when they were in, but I do remember when I’d go thrifiting with my mom as a kid in the early 1990s seeing *tons* of acid wash jeans for like 50 cents! (Those were the days to thrift–oh how I mourn them now!!) I really admire you for wearing something that alot of people still have a strong reaction to. You make them look cool. I have to admit, after seeing how you rock the look, I’ve been keeping my eyes open for a vintage pair in the thrift stores… *grin*

I was sad to see Alison get kicked off too–she seemed to have a more offbeat sense of style (but not the same as Angela, whose style I don’t really care for). She seemed sweet and able to handle the challenges. I have to say although her model looked bad in Alison’s dress, I got the idea behind the dress and thought the concept was quite elegant. So sad the judges made her go… :(

  14. It was a total travesty that Alison was kicked off–you shold have seen my mouth drop to the floor. I haven’t heard if there is internet/blogging buzz about her having deserved it (i mean, her dress was pretty hideous) but it also seemed like a bit of a fluke considering how interestingly made her other work has been so far. Yargh! Does this bode for an awful awful season? My boyfriend almost stopped watching last season with me after the first Daniel got kicked off for his black lacey lingerie, he was so mad about it!

80s are definitely around again (love it!) and the sad thing is that unlike most of the 20-somethings happily rampaging through the style, I actually *remember* it the first time around…hee hee!

  15. I have loved acid wash for years now– mostly because it would rankle the goths when I wore it, but I felt it was perfectly apocalyptic. I had this one dress I gave away before I moved- man, I wish I didn’t now.

I love how you mix up the crazy denim. You are such and inspriation!

  16. stephanie: i felt alison’s dress wasn’t any fabulous thing, but it was less hideous than others up there (kayne? that old, pervy guy whose name escapes me at this early hour?). whatever. it’s done, she’s gone.

i sort of missed some of the 80s stuff, being that i was 5-15 at the time…like, the early 80s sort of passed me by because i was too busy wearing my oshkosh and little pinafore dresses and such. now as for the 90s, i can leave them be, pretty much. i’m probably not going to do the uber-wide leg pants again. i’ve had my lot.

ally: hah! i bet the goths FREAKED over the acid wash. like i said in the other comment, it always seemed to me there was such a “uniform” in the goth (and punk) world…any deviation and i’m sure they just didn’t even know what to do/say. :P it would be fun just to mess with them, right?

acid wash…i guess i love it partially because people HATE it. i love things that are sort of dogged by society at large. fashion is so fickle. trends move so fast, it’s tedious. i like finding a way to make something vehemently disliked attractive, if that makes any sense.

  17. Pervy guy, definitely, cumatively should have gone. However ,Allisons garments,in my opinion were tricky, with regard to flaterring the female form. I’ve been thrilled with season 3, love Michael, love Jeffery !
My vote goes to overalls, I’ve been cleaning the thrift stores out. I like to pair them with sheer vintage tops, pearls ,and cowboy boots.

  18. what! goths here have been wearing black acid wash SINCE the 80s, i think. they’re the only ones buying it! but i think the strawberry switchblade goth look was a lot bigger here, as well, at least in the late 90s. mmm, black acid wash. so good.

  19. tamera:

funny you say that…i was just thinking about “thrift grails” yesterday and today (meaning, something you are dying to thrift and haven’t yet). i’d KILL to thrift a black or grey acid wash denim jacket like the blue one i have and wear all the time…

  20. shoe clips are cool, clip on earrings (I collect old costume jewelry) hurt, bonnets do NOTHING for any outfit in my opinion unless you’re Laura Ingalls, and, I don’t think I have any kind of reaction to acid wash (whether it’s in or out today) - it’s denim and I don’t think denim ever goes out of style… Now tell me what exactly are “grandma shoes”? (and I probably don’t want to know because I’m old enough to be someone’s grandma and I probably wear them! LOL!)

  21. bonnets can be good, and i stand by my statement, example: http://dearbirthday.com/summerbonnets.html my friend valerie makes them and they are mighty cute. it’s just a hat, after all, and it keeps the sun out of one’s eyes. i designed a crocheted winter bonnet i’m hoping to put up for sale later this fall.

clip ons don’t have to hurt: one can get small pads for them from jewelry stores and it takes the ouch away.

grandma shoes: comfortable shoes, shoes that are less about fashion, and more about comfort. shoes that are a little retro. google “worishofer” and you’ll get an idea of what i mean.
