yet another knitted cowl! made of 100% wool worsted. has stripes of sequins. i’ve been wearing it with everything. i made it back in december….but just now got to taking a photo of it. just a simple little thing, a bit of mindless knitting.

a restyled canvas guatemalan dress i thrifted several weeks back:
thrifted guatemalan dress
it was actually floor length, with slits on either side up to the knees. it’s now an empire style dress with pleats under the bust, and an a-line skirt. the sleeves are actually wide bells, which is hard to discern here, of course.

i had a long wait for the bus yesterday on my way to go thrifting, so i entertained myself my taking a few snaps:

  1. I love your knitted cowl. Your style of knitting is so wearable, like your other cowl and the cumin colored dress you made out of cotton. I always like to see your funky outfits.

Great job on the dress- the colors are amazing and I love your restyling of it.

  2. Wow–that dress is such a great find! I always love to see how you’ve restyled your thrift finds to better suit your aesthetic. :) Also love the new cowl–the sequins really make it fun!! :D

  3. The dress is so beautiful–floor length it would be way too much but you shortened it to the perfect length and it’s adorable!

  4. These are the types of posts that make me long for the sewing machine I’m buying this wkend. What a magnificent dress and how much more wearable is it at knee length? Sigh.

  5. I know I am a completely random person, but I think you have a lot of talent! I’ve seen some of the things you put together, and now that you live in San Francisco, you should think about consigning with my friend at Venus Superstar. I just know she’ll love your stuff! She’s at 1112 Sutter St @ Larkin.

  6. I love the neck of that coat – and would love to see a full pic of it (or do you have one up of it already? I don’t remember seeing it before).

Your restyling of the dress really impresses me. I wondered, if you have any time, if you could look at this post on my blog: http://shrinkydinkkitten.blogspot.com/2006/08/thrift-shopping-scores.html and tell me if you have any ideas for restyling the third dress (the long, cerulean blue, cheonsam one with the amazing white print). It is far too long, but I don’t want to cut off the bottom, as the print is best there. I like the idea of turning it into an empire waisted dress by taking out part of the middle … but the big flower in the middle is so spectacular too … any other ideas?

  7. Great cowl! And a woman unafraid of close ups is my heroine!

  8. that cowl reminds me of a beautiful alpaca scarf i saw in arequipa, peru. it was more of a charcoal grey with brown sequins, but had the same overall look. it was gorgeous, but i figured it was a simple pattern not worth buying, but seeing your cowl makes me long for it…
and i too love you guatemalan dress. guatemala has great textiles.
    :)

  9. hello…i stumbled along your blog since i started knitting. what is your pattern for the cowl or where can i find one? I want to make one for myself and i have had trouble finding a pattern on my own! thanks.

  10. I love that cowl! I’ve been looking for a knitting pattern for something like this. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction? I would really appreciate it!

Also, I love your restyled dresses! I don’t know how many times I’ve been at Beacon’s Closet or the flea market at 10th and Ave A and seen dresses and been like, “Hmmmm. I could cut here, take it in there….” However, my sewing skills aren’t all that. Given that, you’ve inspired me to take an alterations class at Make Workshop in the Lower East Side! Thanks a bunch for your wonderful pics!
