Thanks for this, Tricia. It is nice to hear something about clothes and style besides "buy, buy, buy," and "be trendy and enjoy excess." Your entry made me think of this recent nytimes article:

Ugh, sorry, I just realised how badly I articulated that. Hopefully you get the gist?

I admire Vivienne Westwood, but I do think that if she really believed what she said for that article, she would not necessarily stop designing, but at least stop mass produced items that just have her logo/label on them and no other "unique" parts. I'm sorry, I want to believe that she means what she is saying - I think that she's right, regardless of what she really thinks - yet I think she is against people buying stuff from high street stores in massive quantities, but her own products are fine.

casey: you're welcome. i love to share links.

on the subject of following trends: what do you think of the trend of following or taking inspiration from street fashion shots? they are becoming hugely popular, people like to post them in their blogs and such, like to imitate the looks shown down to the letter, the way others try to replicate runway looks, i've noted.

imo, street fashion photography is about celebrating and admiring other's original twists on their own style, the creative personal, idiosyncratic expression of style, the look of the "everyday" person...it need not necessarily be replicated. most of the time those are honestly photos of people interpreting runway looks anyway, just further down the fashion foodchain from the source.

it makes me want to ask pointed questions, in an effort to start a discourse, to question the status quo: is it all copying? is there any original thought?

inspiration comes from everywhere...i just really like it when someone instead takes something and makes it their own, somehow, instead, instead of regurgitating. where does original thought begin and end?

and...why don't more people eschew the status quo? questions, questions. :P

Thanks for sharing all these links!! And that quote from Vivienne Westwood was right on! I look at her, like many designers who really came into their own around that time period (70s/80s) as the Queen of the Individual. I mean, her collections rocked then and they're pretty darn unique now. I love the fact that she's voicing the idea of not following trends. I'm tired of seeing people so wed to the idea of "whats trendy" that they don't look inside themselves or at the mountains of inspiration around them to develop they own look. Its so stifling in a way!! Dress to please yourself, not a fashion editor. ;)
