the granny square blanket = finished (mostly!)

seems like it’s been ages since i posted anything i’ve created!

remember the granny square blanket i started way back in june? well, i finished it sometime around the end of august. my memory is a bit hazy as to the exact date of completion, but i’m pretty sure i put it all together sometime right before we moved to our new place. which would mean late august, if my post project calculations are right.

here it ’tis:

the bedroom area

i was intending to felt it, but i don’t have a top-loader washing machine available (all the ones in our new building are front loaders…shucks!). so i may just leave it be. it’s seen here on our bed, which was it’s intended destination from the beginning. i am planning on making some pillow-sham type things for some of the pillows and adding a few more bargello pillows, maybe this jonathan adler one. i like how everything else it pretty modern in the area (the bed frame, the quilt, the shelf), with all these hand-wrought touches about. a tried and true to me visual juxtaposition.

overall, i am really happy with how it turned out…and that i had the patience to stick with it and finish the whole thing. actually, admittedly, i was chomping at the bit to finish the damn thing, so obsessed, that any potential procrastination really didn’t figure into the granny-square blanket project at all, okay? OKAY?? (yes, i am a bit type-a.)

  1. Love it, love it, love it! I stop by all the time to check out what’s going on fashion-wise here, but rarely (never?) comment. Your blanket and your fabulous room have made me delurk. Wonderful!

  2. oh my gosh! it turned out WONDERFUL! i can’t believe you could stand to wait so long to show it off :)

  3. nancy: well, my camera was out of commission for a while (several weeks), and also, i’ve been working like a dog lately. so i took this picture and uploaded it to flickr like 2 weeks ago, but it’s just now i’m showing it off here! yikes.

  4. Oh I love it!! And I love the whole set up on your bed, all of it, the Love pillows and orange shelf.. looks so good.

  5. WOW! LOVE the colors!

  6. sad that i have to count the answer to the spam protection question on my fingers? yes.

anyway, that blanket looks great. and i just recently learned what bargello is and now i’m seeing it everywhere. i love when that happens.

  7. oh my god! i used to have a million of these. but my grandma dies 7 years ago, and i’m holding onto two… i miss having these kinds of blankies around.
    :(

  8. It’s lovely! Don’t felt it, it beautiful as is. It adds a playful touch to your modern bedroom. I have always had a soft spot for granny square afgans/blankets, even when they were on the outs (“Rosanne” had one – they were not so stylish then!). I have one, twin size, that my aunt made for me (my sister got a matching one too) when I was little. It has traveled everywhere with me, through a cross country move, and always feels homey. Glad it’s chilly now so that I can use it!

    Wonderful job and great colors.

  9. it’s amazing! i wouldn’t risk felting it, it’s totally lovely as is.

  10. Gorgeous blanket! I never would have thought of joining with yellow. I’m using white. and i’m glad i found this blog. i’ve adding it to my blogroll.

  11. You don’t NEED a top loader washer to felt. I wish this myth would stop circulating. What makes wool felt (or full in this case) is hot soapy water and friction. granted, with a top loader you can stop the process and check on progress, but a knitted or crochet item doesn’t shrink overly dramatically.
Make a scrap square and throw it in the washer with your next laundry load and see what happens. Do it!

  12. It looks great and I agree with previous commenter, you don’t need top load at all. Just bulk it in there, or keep as is – it’s beautiful and sunshiny! :-)

I’m making a blanket too now, in ripples! Looove it!

  13. check out my crochet bedspread (i finished it years ago and still haven’t woven in the ends!)
