fashion obsessions o’ the moment
it’s been a while since i have done this…heck, it’s been a while since i have done a lot of things!! still insanely tired! and sick…had the stomach flu last week and felt like i was going to keel over and die (but thankfully did not!).
in all the sitting around i have been doing of late, i’ve had a lot of time to just sit there and ponder things…that i’m obsessed with. fashion obsessions! idle time is good for letting such obsessions grow and fester, don’tcha know?
so, my latest fashion obsessions are as such:
plastic (or that which resembles it) is the name of the game for me right now, apparently…? something about it’s smoothness, shine. it’s bright colors. sort of retro-futuristic?
-big, fat, honkin’ cocktail rings, like the resin ones from australia’s dinosaur designs or resin ones from NYC’s alexis bittar
-vintage german cazal eyeglass frames, very old-school hip-hop!
-clear eyeglass frames (like the fresh cazal pair shown above)
-plastic watches in super bright, saturated colors, like the zub zot watch (also shown above)
-old, eye bleedingly bright, chunky vintage sweaters from the 1970s, in colors like sunshine yellow, almost fluorescent red-orange, emerald green. things funky grandmothers or tripping hippies would have donned with relish. these are likely also made of plastic (acrylic or poly, this is one of the only clothing items i deign to tolerate that are synthetic in fiber, clothing-wise).
also:
-plastic shoes in inspired shapes (like the melissa ones’s shown above, as so often donned by in the inimitable gala darling!)
-big, brash baubles in gumball bright shades
-anything by tatty devine
so, praytell: what are your fashion obsessions of the moment? what’s nagging on your brain, aesthetically, this very second?

Nadia LewisI think I’ve been working an office job too long, because now I want to make office clothes. Not modern ones, but 1970s-style secretary ones.
Of course, then I’d have to trade in my LCDs and keyboard for a typewriter. Which would be so cute, but likely not approved by upper management. Oh well, I’ll make the clothes instead.

jennifercurrently obsessing over hexagons, batik, saturated color, and unexpected color combinations. the fact i am working on a batiks only grandma’s flower garden quilt is probably what’s driving at least part of my obsessions.

SarahBrightly colored lace, layers of knits, 70’s hair, patchwork.
I have one of those 70’s sweaters you’re talking about, it’s bright yellow and amazing. I wear it all the time with knee-high tan suede boots.

KristinaWe’ve finally got a touch of cold here in Florida, so I’m obsessed with layering: dresses, colored tights, sweater vests, jackets tied up with a vintage belt. Constantly obsessed with the spring line of Frye shoes (though I’ve not pounced at any yet, I’ve been eyeing a pair of blue t-strap flats), and finding ways to wear the ecru tina campus boots I got on sale. Also have decided that, at 30, it’s time for me to own a decent handbag (all of mine are 80s vintage), so have been surfing MxMJ handbags on ebay like a nut.

AllyI’m so sad that every piece I have from from Tatty Devine has broken beyond repair. I finally went back to the shop when my favourite “Devine” kilt pin lost a letter (I am very gentle with my jewelry!) and the customer service (if you can call it that) was so terrible I decided not to go back. I really can’t afford to spend another £50 on something that is going to break after I wear it for a few months.
Anyway, sorry to rant. I mentioned this to a friend and she said she had the same experience.
Right now I’m obsessed with antique gold or brass and anything that’s nouveau decadent and diva-ish– capes and opera gloves and fascinators worn with black acid wash denim.

sarahalso gumball necklaces - I just made one last month with bright pink stones and brass chain. saddle shoes, but not in classic black-and-white colour combo. long cardigans. layers of sheer things - I’ve been debating just throwing something crazy together on my dressform using the nylon stretch mesh and silk chiffon I have in my stash, more for the fun than the functionality of it. Or making a sheer, beaded flapper dress to wear over one of the now ubiquitous slips on the market, but all that beading is a real commitment and I haven’t found/dreamt up a pattern to use yet (but I’m thinking about doing some research into patterns/colour combos in Klimt). So I’m still undecided.

MarlenaI don’t mean to pimp myself, but this sweater I just finished has me pretty excited again about sweater dresses and skinny pants again: http://www.flickr.com/photos/33379423@N00/2205652111/
I wish my boyfriend had gotten my feet in there, I would have sent that shot to wardrobe remix.
