seen here getting ready to go get brunch, and then groceries, etc, back on the 7th.

i just finished this sweater, it’s the “swing pullover/bell sleeve turtleneck sweater” from knit simple’s fall 2010 issue (ravelry link). i’ve been crazy obsessed with garter stitch for a while. and the color yellow. so i pretty much did this one exactly as shown on the cover/in the mag.

this was a ridiculously fun and easy knit, but their instructions for finishing the neck area (in my opinion) are incomplete in the pattern as written. wrote them. unsurprisingly, got no reply. finished it my own way. whatever.

i’m calling it my “ronald mc big bird sweater”. that said i love it so. might make it in say, gray someday. it’s crazy cozy and comfortable but does weigh half a squillion pounds.

other deets:

-yellow thermal long sleeve tee: old navy, thrifted
-vintage levi’s 501’s: etsy
-red resin ring: dinosaur designs
-striped bag: from a vendor at the BAM africa festival summer 2010.
-red patent ankle boots: nordstrom’s rack in chicago
-acid yellow hat: crocheted by moi
-red acrylic earrings: UO
-crocheted scrumble pin: made in a freeform crochet class linda p. and i took years ago.
-star pin: thrifted in SF

on miss p.:

-hat: handknit by her great aunt patty (thought i lost it when she was around 6-7 months, found it in an old purse yesterday and almost cried!)
-red plaid windbreaker: polarn o. pyret
-pleated jeans: baby gap
-moto boots: target

oh well!
i’ve been busy…amongst other things, i have mostly rabidly working on what you see above:

-a granny square blanket using scraps from my yarn stash (will probably go on our bed, we shall see), edged with white…

-a garter patch throw blanket, also using yarn from my stash (i have a LOT of scraps, ok? it’s pretty extreme!)…

-and seen in the center, a liberated “log cabin” (very loosely defined!) quilt, a la gwen marston, using all solids.

the patchwork work mostly gets done during the day (to take advantage of the daylight coming into my studio), and the knitting and crocheting fills many of my nights. i may start doing more patchwork stuff at night, as i now have a wonderful set of powerful tracklights in the studio, thanks to a local electrician.

***

i’ve been checking into the interwebs daily, but mostly, i’m just continuing to take a rest and i’m going through a period where i am mostly observing, rather than doing much contributing. i want to come back, but at the same time, i feel like i still need and want this time to step back, to just be in the background for a while, whilst i figure everything out.

calling all knitters & crocheters who happen to read this here blog!

what’s your favorite way of using up your random ends of yarn? particularly your worsted weight yarns? can you recommend a favorite pattern or several patterns that are just the ticket for yarn oddments?

i have a gazillion little leftover bits of wool and wool blend yarns, the remainder from the myriad of projects i’ve completed over the last six (!!!) years. they are up there in the photo above. and that’s only a small fraction of what i have…it’s merely the tip of the remnant yarn iceberg, if you will.

so far, i’ve put them to use as a wavy crocheted blanket, numerous cowls, a random stripey kids sweater, and a few more things…

i can think of a few more ways i might want to use it: to make striped legwarmers, striped mittens (for me and maybe a bunch of other folks!), more cowls, a top-down raglan fitted cardi for moi, a granny square or circle blanket for p., and, hrm…i’m still thinking ha!

anyway, i’m putting a call out to you, to ask for help for genius ideas to do with all this yarn. can you help??

maybe it will help more than just me!

do share!

i know, i know i haven’t posted a lot of handmade things in…quite a while. months, even? i’ve been doing this and that for pay and for personal use (sewing, knitting, crocheting and the like), but have been pretty neglectful about posting the results of such here.

until now! whee!

my latest creative pursuits have been for the baby…who’s coming very, very soon (only 9 more weeks (or so) to go)! yes, these are the first baby things i’ve made for the girl thus far. yes, to some, just doing these kinds of projects now (when i am 31 weeks/in my last trimester!) might seem kind of late.

to those opinionated somebodies who may believe i’m late to the game, i will say in my defense that i had a bit of a superstitious moratorium on making or even buying a lot of baby things until the last month or so. why? well…to be completely candid, and a lot personal, i lost a baby about 6 years ago via a tubal pregnancy. i wanted to feel *really* comfortable with the status of my current pregnancy before i started preparing for my baby’s arrival with any purchases or delving in to any projects for her.

and then…also, to be honest, i got a little lazy, and a little…no, a LOT tired. i am now (somewhat frantically!) trying to catch up.

anyway, w/o any further ado, here are a few of the sweet little results of my recent (fiber-wielding) labors…

***

i love how this one turned out…i would totally wear this myself! haha! it’s made from super soft malabrigo (100% wool), and this pattern. the button is vintage and crocheted…it was a thrift find from way back.

***

le baby girl royal will get to rock the bright colors just like her crazy mom! this one’s made from this pattern with cascade 220. the buttons are vintage and are really two different buttons stacked upon one another. the trim is from m&j trim, bought back in my parsons days, when i still lived in the big (old) apple.

***

i have a few more baby sweaters (and maybe some booties! or a blankie!) i want to make before she gets here. will i have the time? we shall see!

on the positive side, these little sweaters and things are so fun and fast to work up! they become quite addictive…once i made one i felt inspired to make a slew of others. so…stay tuned. who knows, perhaps i’ll post a few more (if fatigue and life doesn’t get the best of me) in the coming weeks! no promises, though…

oh, life has been good lately. i can’t say exactly what i’ve been doing exactly (certainly not blogging tons, huh?), or why , but i’ve been in a deliciously good mood. and sometimes that’s all that really matters. blogging happens when it happens for me i guess. patience on the part of any interested parties is all that’s really needed. if there are interested parties! haha!

of course, i have obsessions, i always do!

-the little things in life.
-the passages of life.
-lots of long walks in the warm midday san francisco sun.
-little fruit salads. i’m all about green grapes and strawberries together at the moment. sometimes i toss in a pear or an orange. YUMMO.
-knitting stuff. knitting everything. reknitting, knitting more.

-my husband. he’s the best!
-the future bebe. i heard it’s little heartbeat the other day. pretty darn neat. i’ve been smiling ever since. here’s hoping everything’s going well in there. *points to belly questioningly*
-as far as colors, navy blue (like the color of dark, inky denim), paired with light sky blue and intense orange (see the orange on the pile of knits up there).
-the way the sky looks sometimes around sunset…the mix of violet, blue-violet, orange, and yellow. it’s of the most beautiful sights i think i have ever seen.

if you read my recent post over on the threadbanger blog, beret brained!…you know i’m all about the beret at the moment. it’s definitely a continuation of everything hat-centric i’ve been blabbering about for most of this year.

in recent weeks, i have been looking all around, high, low, here, and there for the perfect beret pattern. it has not been an easy task, for i wanted something easy, basic quick to make, pretty classic, not too slouchy, and worsted-weight yarn worthy. a tall order! though the lacy, oversized or chunky ones are lovely, they weren’t *exactly* what i had in mind in my mind’s eye.

i found some promising contenders around the ye olde world-wide-web (as evidenced by the round-up i linked to in the aforementioned post)…but like goldielocks and the three bears, none of them was quite right.

however, yesterday around 3pm a tiny crafty lightbulb flickered on on above my head, and shone brightly: i know where to find a pattern for the perfect beret! it’s a pattern contained within a vintage copy of the reader’s digest complete guide to needlework, a lovely classic craft tome i thrifted ages and ages ago.

i had attempted said beret yonks ago when i was first learning how to crochet (that would be way back in what, 2004??) but for some reason didn’t complete it. i’m pretty well-versed with the crocheting now, natch, and usually don’t use patterns, but now and again i like the ease of not having to work everything out myself. so armed with some super basic bright yellow wool yarn (cascade 220), i got to work. three short hours later, i had myself the beret of my “dreams”.

easy peasy.

love projects like this! nearly instant gratification.

***

(p.s. i am OBSESSED with yellow at the moment. orange still reigns supreme as my favorite color o’ the past several years, but yellow is a recent fling with which i am having a torrid color affair. anyone else similarly smitten with yellow??)

seems like it’s been ages since i posted anything i’ve created!

remember the granny square blanket i started way back in june? well, i finished it sometime around the end of august. my memory is a bit hazy as to the exact date of completion, but i’m pretty sure i put it all together sometime right before we moved to our new place. which would mean late august, if my post project calculations are right.

here it ’tis:

i was intending to felt it, but i don’t have a top-loader washing machine available (all the ones in our new building are front loaders…shucks!). so i may just leave it be. it’s seen here on our bed, which was it’s intended destination from the beginning. i am planning on making some pillow-sham type things for some of the pillows and adding a few more bargello pillows, maybe this jonathan adler one. i like how everything else it pretty modern in the area (the bed frame, the quilt, the shelf), with all these hand-wrought touches about. a tried and true to me visual juxtaposition.

overall, i am really happy with how it turned out…and that i had the patience to stick with it and finish the whole thing. actually, admittedly, i was chomping at the bit to finish the damn thing, so obsessed, that any potential procrastination really didn’t figure into the granny-square blanket project at all, okay? OKAY?? (yes, i am a bit type-a.)
