new favorite finds
surely someone out there in the largely silent ether of the internets can relate:
do you ever thrift something, just knowing it will be your new favorite thing in your wardrobe? do you delight in the fact you paid so little for such, as i do? do you revel in the fact that you’re giving something another chance at a new life, a new interpretation?
all of the above were thrifted within the week: two black cocktail hats, the perfect pair of 70s vintage lee jeans with wide hems, and simple but chic black vintage pumps with faux alligator texture.
i have been thinking a lot about hats lately…and by lately i mean the past several months, as this post way back when can attest. this photo of jonesy80, one of my very favorite wardrobe_remix(ers), reminded me of my desire for such.
i love how she’s paired it with more modern threads. mixin’ it up, if you will.
i’m not so much thinking of fedoras or bowlers or other super structured or masculine toppers, but hats that are really little feminine fripperies, such as pillboxes and cocktail hats. i like the idea of wearing them with a modern dress, or with a revealing tank on the weekend, while doing something completely casual, like scarfing down a hamburger or slurping down a beer. the visual juxtaposition of such, the ironic thought of it, appeals to me.
in my fashion fantasy land, cocktail hats are comin’ back, with a vengance. i’ll be rockin’ those pictured here unapologetically.

Nadia LewisI love the animal texture on the shoes — it makes them look a little evil. They remind me of a pair I found a few months ago (http://nadiacrafts.blogspot.com/2006/12/ode-to-italian-shoe.html) which look reptilian or insectoid.
As for hats, I’d love to see you do a series on them, as I own so many, but never wear them. I think you’re right about cocktail hats — they are so tiny that they’d be cute accents. All the hats I seem to buy are quite large so there never seems a place for them.

Tess LeeWhat adorable hats! I absolutely love that feeling. I just found a great dress, black linen with simple rose trim on the bodice. Just simple, cute, and fits well with out any editing! I would wear it every day if I could!

IconoclasticI have been thinking about hats too! And Winona Ryder’s character from Autumn In New York keeps popping into my head because the hats she character made struck the delicate balance between Now and Nostalgia. I remember the one which was supposed to resemble the “line of a woman’s hip” fondly.

ambikaI’ve been wanting to start a collection of hats–a very conscious decision to collect them in a way that I do very little else because I am usually very anti-clutter, anti-stash (which, believe me, is a habit that is under assault with all of my sewing lately). But hats, *especially* frippery, feminine hats with fur, feathers, veils, are just amazing in a way that other accessories often aren’t for me (except maybe shoes.) I am inspired by your pictures and will be on the look out to start my collection soon.

Lisa-GabrielleI fondly remember a black cocktail hat with little black birds with real feathers on it ,and a viel, often worn in my teens(including to a Public Image Limited concert). I got rid of it in a huge de-cutter before I was married. I actually think of it often.

kaytetotally with you on the hats.
i wore one of those cocktail hats that looks like a headband in lieu of a veil at my wedding and i just bought a few more on ebay a couple of months ago. i plan on wearing them often this spring.

JennI am completely envious of your ability to wear such hats. I love them, but they make me look like I have a melon head (I really need something with a brim, so that’s what I tend to shop for now.) But, those are awesome, and I can’t wait to see what you pair them with and how they show up in your wardrobe.

the covetedi love your hats! they are super cute! i also love nets… they double as disguises, which are great for being sneaky….
my favorite thrift store find, are a pair of vintage ferragamos, they are so well made, and survive city wear and tear.

RachelI’m jealous of your finds! You would love my little cocktail hat collection. Maybe one day I’ll take pictures for my blog. Actually, here’s a very old picture of one of my favorites:

Whenever I wear them, which isn’t very often, I get tons of compliments.
I just bought a scooter today, so I’m projecting lots of helmet hair for my future–perhaps hats will be my savior.

MelissaI must say, that second vintage cocktail dress is amazing! I’ve been looking for one like that for the opera but I can’t manage to locate anything under $75. If you happen to fall across another one like that anytime soon, I’d be glad to pay you for it!
