bits and bobbins

be yourself.

you don’t have to be a direct mirror-like reflection/copy of:

-the latest trends (straight off the runways)
-the fashionistas snapped on the streets that are posted to many a street fashion blog these days
-the hottest movie star
-the hippest member of whatever band
-a model
-whatever. fill in the blank.

direct copies are derivative anyway. give what you wear your own spin.

it’s not a competition. you don’t have to “keep up”.

no one is perfect. in fact, the imperfections are what make us real, what make us interesting.

nobody but you is keeping as close track of things (you wear), trust me. and if they are, well, their priorities aren’t straight.

you don’t have to be anything but YOU. find your own way. be smart.

be as inspiring as you are inspired.

be yourself.

(it’s far more interesting.)

  1. Well said! I agree!

  2. thanks so much for this post. we need to be reminded once in a while.

  3. speak it, sister.

  4. I really like this set

  5. i agree, thankfully with age you (hopefully) really don’t care about trying to fit in, and it’s not just in clothes its with behavior/action/lifestyle.

I really wish preteens, esp. those weird middle school years, a lot of times people are so preoccupied with fitting in, or being one of the cool crowd, and thinking the whole world revolves around you. i dont know i guess its whenever i watch MTV and see those LA girls they terrify me at how “clone like” their appearances and behaviors are. and these are the “role models” as in the amount of exposure they get in the media that has nothing to do with any sort of skill or talent.

ok, i’m getting off topic. but you’re right on lady.

ps ignore the previous comment, i clicked the wrong thing. oops.

  6. a nice reaffirmation that i agree wholeheartedly with. i think street blogs give insight into how people are being themselves in an every day way, especially since it can capture a regional fashion zeitgeist.

of course, i’m biased here :) — but beyond that, i do think people are trying to express themselves via clothes and can find inspiration on blogs, in magazines, in wardrobe remix.

  7. I AM KEEPING TRACK OF WHAT YOU WEAR. Hahahah.

I love these posts, Tricia. Keep up the good work.

  8. ugh thanks for the reminder. i needed it. i think it’s just so depressing when this media pressure affects even those who are normally apathetic to the hype and dress as they please (i.e. my friends and myself, and of course many others.)

  9. here here!

  10. [...] -smagglestyle (whom i found b/c she recently commented here on bits and bobbins telling me she wrote a post about wardrobe_remix…hello! and thank you!) has a small, sassy list of quality quotes in this recent post of hers. read them all! i like this one especially, from THE coco chanel, as i think it relates rather well to my recent post, be yourself: The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud. [...]

  11. This post goes so great with my yummy breakfast today.

I remember almost a year ago I went out on a date with this guy and i wore my obnoxiously bright yellow galoshes (rain boots?) to a night out on the town. At one point he told me “you know, I love that you don’t care that people may be looking at you or your boots” and I said, “of course I dont care! These boots make me happy!”

so i guess the point is, if youre happy with what you’re wearing who cares about anything else!

(he turned out to be a jerk, but i think that is my fondest memory of him)
