(free) knit(wear) patterns, woot!

in recent weeks, i've run across some VERY chic sewing patterns for knits, available for free via the internets, and i thought i'd pass the word along...

martha of uniform natural designed this drapey stunner called the origami wrap sweater, which is easy peasy, but has a sculptural shape and is suitable for any mid to heavy weight knit (as long as it doesn't have a whole lotta stretch, she says). she just put it up the other day; i totally want to make one...stat. wow...martha. just...wow. breathtaking and incredibly chic.

the gals at sydney, australia's tessuti fabrics have this drapey tent-shaped tee up on the web for download here. i've made one myself already, it's amazing! the sleeves are fitted, and the rest isn't, it's very loose and comfy and kind of, i dunno, japanese, 80s-ish or something? i am so wanting to make another, but want to make it longer so it's more of a tunic/dress thing. i think i could just about live in it, so roomy and cuddly it would be. it comes out in a small-ish to medium size, so if you're bigger or smaller you'd have to add or subtract from/to the side seams. sews up in a flash.

grooving on navy blue, and really, most blues at the moment. i'm pairing it with my oranges, my reigning chromatic favorite of much of the past decade (natch!).
can't really discern where this this navy blue love is coming from, but i have a few theories (some more serious than others):
-navy feels kind of trad and classic, even really very preppy, but at the same time, subversive. like, people wear it, but it's not as prevalent as black, and not considered as chic, especially in a urban environment. it's kind of unexpected and maybe a little off-putting to some. i am always about the underdog, the tweak on that which is expected and the norm and the trend, so this dig at black stuff/championing of navy instead appeals to my sense of fashion rightness (which i feel like is other people's idea of fashion wrongness). i like being contrary, ha.
-i've always had a thing for inky dark denim. i adore denim and so many of it's incarnations, and i've always felt that there's something really deep and serious and amazing about dark, raw denim. so solid and stiff and dependable. kind of dressed up, dressy, even. very chic. and navy/dark denim is so go-with-everything. a neutral if there ever was one.
-a possible subconscious channeling of my (current) local sports team's colors. apparently the chicago bears colors are navy and orange?? HAHA!! some guy saw me walking down michigan ave. yesterday and called out "GO BEARS!" (i was wearing the navy blue boots pictured above, navy tights, navy knee socks, a denim skirt, a navy tee, a navy cardigan, a navy velvet blazer and the orange scarf, also pictured above, plus this crazy hat i made a couple weeks back, also navy.) ok, i am less certain that this is a reason why i am into the pairing ATM, but it's a funny coincidence.

(my bio!)

i've got an article in BUST magazine this month...well, it's sort of a column...it's the LOOKS column! i am so very honored to have been asked to do it; the LOOKS column has been one of my favorite features in BUST since i started reading the mag in the early 2000s...i have torn out and saved tons of the previous featured girls & their interviews over the years!
BUST is, hands down, one of my favorite magazines, i am always delighted when it lands in my mailbox. how incredible is it to get the chance to WRITE the LOOKS column?? pretty awesome. a dream come true actually.
the first interview for the column is with the absolutely gorgeous and unique tamera ferro, of verhext.com, who has been a long time contributor to wardrobe_remix (since close to the beginning, i think??). i've always admired her style...there's absolutely no one like her in the universe (especially style-wise!) and i felt she deserves the recognition and accolades! doesn't she look stunning??!! such a creative gal.
thanks tamera! thanks BUST!
