(not so) random links

i figure i'll make this a regular thing, as it's fun to curate links to amazingness and interestingness happening about the 'webs and beyond!

-canadian artist/printmaker jodi green has embarked upon an intriguing (to me!) MFA project: in an attempt to integrate her studio processes, clothing designs and her "everyday life," she's embarking on a project to dye and then print fabrics using printmaking processes such as woodcut, lithography, and etching, which she then turns into clothing that she will then wear as she goes about her daily business. note that the inks used to make said prints on her clothing break down over time, so the garments also change over time. and she mentions changing the garment via printing processes each time. talk about remixing one's clothing! the results of her efforts are stunning. a deeper look into jodi's wardrobe project may be found on her website. jodi's keeping a record of said clothing in her wardrobe project flickr set, and her blog. (bonus info for the fiber junkies and people will cash to blow: jodi's also an amazing knitter and has her own etsy shop.)

-some months ago, the author of the boat lullabies found a cosmetics case full of old photographs at a chicago-area flea market. the pictures are a poignant look into the life of one (rather fashionable) woman over the course of approximately 50 years, from toddler-hood on into her middle age. fascinating to me from the perspective that we are able to observe the incredibly beautiful and complex metamorphosis that each and every human (or really, every living thing) goes through over the course of a lifetime. we change so much in the interim between birth and death, but there remains a common thread of self-ness that remains in the physical and spiritual being of any given individual. relating to the primary subject matter of bits and bobbins as a blog, it's also a enthralling look at one woman's singular sense of style and life-long love affair with fashion/style. (bonus: the rest of the entries on the boat lullabies seem to feature interesting old photographs, if you're into that sort of thing. i know i am!)

-andrea zittel, the conceptual artist behind a-z 6 month uniforms (a project dealing with concepts revolving around the basic needs of working artists), has a new project, the smockshop. andrea designed a simple double wraparound garment. a passel of artists re-interpreted her design, each in their own unique way. said artists make money off these one-of-a-kind garments, many of whom are not yet self-sustaining via their regular artistic endeavors.

it's set to be a crazy couple of weeks at chez royal. pete and i are moving in two weeks (yikes! but yay!) and the packing process has already begun. and i have a lot of work to do the next couple of weeks (away from home at my new part time gig, and at home with other worky-work), so...i'll try my best to check in and post here and there but no promises. :)

i'm excited about the move, though! not excited about the actual moving process (does ANYONE like that??) but more about being in the new, clean, fresh, bigger space. i'm already fantasizing that i am there! mostly mundane, home-body-ish stuff like drinking tea in my bright new kitchen, new (and new to me) pieces of furniture i'd love to acquire, how i am going to arrange my stuff (even plants and vases!), and the like.

***

so, besides moving (as if that isn't enough to think and obsess over, right?!) i'm obsessing over thus:

-wearing brash, bold, big earrings (vintage?) in two holes of each ear (proving more is more)
-thickly framed plastic eyeglasses is bright colors (nerd cool!)
-long, fitted knee length shorts
-finally getting to wear my sundresses!
-san francisco's wild parrots. i have seen them twice in the last week: a few of them chirping away on a telephone wire down the road from our house, and a whole flock of them swooping toward telegraph hill when i was up near north beach this past week. i'm taking it as a good omen. if you haven't seen it already, i highly suggest checking out the documentary, the wild parrots of telegraph hill. i saw it on PBS's independent lens a couple months ago, and i desperately hoped to see the pretty birds in person one day. i finally got my wish! they are so vibrantly green and colorful and overtly chirpy. they completely delight me!
-picadillo!
-riding my bike! i've been doing that more lately. will do it even more when i don't have to ride uphill anymore (right now i have to ride up a massive hill to get home...so i usually pop it on the front of the bus)! hah! sometimes i wish i lived in the netherlands or somewhere flat and easy to ride. if i did, i'd have a bike like one of these!
-the indie sex documentary series on the IFC channel. titillating and fascinating.

before i forget!: if you're in SF, you should go to the opening of lisa congdon's solo show, the tenderhearted at the candy store, this thursday, september 6th. be there or be square...lisa's amazing and so is her work.

reviewed by me for you: showing your colors

i love libraries! whenever i have time, i love to go to the local library and peruse the stacks.
my favorite library sections to cruise? the craft section (which contains the knitting, crochet, sewing, and fiber art books) and the fashion section (including tomes on style, fashion history, and the like), and the art, photography, science and history sections too. i especially love the older books (pre-1990s) because they often give a fun peek into the cultural and aesthetic norms of the somewhat-recent and sometimes not so recent past. i look at my local library (or libraries as the case my be) as a terrific an extension of my own personal book collection, there for the borrowing and sharing.
i'm really bad too: i always end up checking out huge stacks of books, intending to gluttonously OD on knowledge, and i struggle to get them home as a result! it's quite a funny sight, i'm sure, with me nearly dragging my stack along behind me and cursing myself because of the tremendous weight pulling down on my shoulders and back.
i think that we're so lucky to have libraries, really! they are undeniably a rich resource at our fingertips, ready to enrich our minds for *nothing*. thus proving the adage: some of the best things in life are free.

on my last library visit, i found this great 80s book, showing your colors: a designers guide to coordinating your wardrobe by jeanne allen, in the style section.

showing your colors: a designers guide to coordinating your wardrobe, by jeanne allen

as one might guess, it's all about coordinating the colors in one's wardrobe. it talks about the mixing of colors, the feeling said colors give off alone or when used in conjunction with other colors.

it's really a fun way to see at a glance how colors sit with one another on the body in different proportions, and can help one ferret out interesting, unexpected pairings that might be fun to take for a stylistic spin.
suffice it to say: awesomeness overload for a color junkie like myself! worth a flick if you can find it at your local library.
