nan kempner: american chic at san francisco's de young museum

yesterday i had the distinct pleasure of attending a press preview of an upcoming exhibition at san francisco's de young museum entitled nan kempner: american chic, which opens to the public june 16, 2007, and runs through november 11, 2007. this unrivaled exhibition will showcase nearly 75 of nan's amazing wearables and ensembles, many of which are fine examples of 20th century couture.
nan kempner, for those who may not be in the know, was a world-reknowned new york city socialite, fashion muse and couture fashion collector. she originally hailed from san francisco, was married to businessman thomas "tommy" kempner, and once served as a contributing editor for harper's bazaar and a u.s. correspondent for french vogue.
to call nan kempner a clothes horse would be an understatement: she was the penultimate fashion obsessive, a chic, educated, dynamic, witty woman with a refined aesthetic who collected clothes as if they were art. while her covetable collection of apparel contained a sizable portion of ready-to-wear, she clearly adored couture clothing above all else, and collected select couture pieces in a steady, deliberate and specific manner over the course of 50 years.

upon her death in 2005, ms. kemner had consciously and deliberately groomed and edited her clothing collection down to what she felt were the very best, most refined expressions of 20th century fashion, removing what she felt were merely passing trends. out of the approximately 5000 pieces of apparel in nan's possession at the end of her life, 3000 were couture. favored designers of ms. kempner/designers that favored ms. kempner? fashion all-stars such as yves st. laurent, valentino, chanel, and balmain, to name but a very few.

this exhibition celebrating ms. kempner's closet of couture comes to san francisco courtesy of the metropolitan museum of art's costume institute, and it's celebrated head curator, harold koda. koda was the mind behind amazing shows like rara avis, honoring the personal style and clothing collection of one of my favorite fashion icons, iris barrel apfel, as well as goddess, chanel, and dangerous liaisons, among a fabulous myriad of others.
mr. koda was the special guest at yesterday's press preview. he knew nan kempner personally, and while walking through the exhibit, he gave all in attendance a unique and enlightening look into the fashionable world of nan kempner: who she truly was, what she loved, and how she lived, and why she was special...all illustrated by a carefully chosen selection of the clothes she wore.
it was, in just a few words, a rare glimpse into the personal style of a fashion icon.

take a lesson! quotes and style notes from the life, mouth and mind of the irreplaceable nan kempner:
-nan had a love affair with fashion, comparing her obsession with all things sartorial to an addiction:

"I'm drunk when it comes to clothes." "It's a disease, like being an alcoholic."

-on trends:

"My mother always said to me, 'Put it all on, then take half of it off.' Understatement is the key. It is important to have your own style and not be one of those creatures who follow fads. I can wear a Dior or Mainbocher couture jacket with a pair of Levi's and it will look great."

-nan kempner heartily believed in buying good quality, well-designed pieces. if something is classic, beautiful and well-made...don't give it away, because it is likely to always remain in style.
-nan was irreverent and democratic about clothes, despite her avowed love of couture. she mixed formal and informal clothes with ease and style:

"Nothing can replace the cut, fit and love that goes into a couture outfit: it has been made by an artist. And besides, it mixes very well with the Gap."

-nan paid attention to detail, and her trained eye allowed her to select and collect a formidable, beautiful, exceedingly personal collection that expressed her amazing personality to a tee. her attention to detail was one of many factors that set her apart from most collectors of fashion or so-called fashion lovers. (remember?: the angel is in the details!)
-Nan heartily believed in the inherent aesthetic value of clothing:

"Fashion is an art."

-nan believed in dressing as best you can within your budget, and in being comfortable, though like other women of style, she didn't at all mind wearing clothes that you could "play" with: she favored clothing with stunning detail that one could morph and style to one's own whim or aesthetic.
-above all: nan kempner wore her clothes with panache. she knew that any successful expression of personal style is ALL ABOUT ATTITUDE. nan wore high-class clothes that some might consider uptight, but she always appeared relaxed and carefree. the lesson one should learn? that style is as much an expression of the personality as the carefully selected threads and baubles that cover our bodies. to paraphrase the words of harold koda yesterday,

"Style is an expression of the soul, the surrogate for the person."

if you live in san francisco or are going to be in the city this summer or fall, i highly suggest checking out the nan kempner exhibit...it's a must see for lovers of fashion and those who appreciate fashion history, costume, and individuals who exude amazing personal style.

DEEP(ER) QUESTIONS:
what do you do for a living? or, if you are a student, what are you studying?
I'm a first-year medical student.
what are your passions/obsessions?
Too many to name! I like to crochet and I'm not bad at it. I also like the idea of knitting and sewing, although these skills come rather difficultly to me. Furthermore, I love reading and watching movies and tv, and lazing about. (Not really the passionate type, haha).
what inspires you?
Fashion-wise: all kinds of costume and uniforms, from ethnic to folk to historical costume and the way people in certain clubs or cliques or social levels or subcultures dress accordingly. The 'codes' and meaning of it all is endlessly fascinating. Other-wise, I'm inspired by dreamy movies like 'In den tag hinein' and 'Nobody knows'. Movies like that where you feel like the characters are moving underwater.
how do you define "style"?
I would have to say it's when what you wear/how you look makes you happy. And it shows!
how would you describe your personal style?
A bit of everything.
how does your background (personal history, passions, culture, nationality, etc.) come through in the clothes you like and wear, if at all?
Well, about two thirds of my clothes are hand-downs from family members, if that's what you mean, haha. We've travelled quite a bit and lived in different countries, so personally I am really keen on all kinds of national dress- I just love the meanings, colors and patterns. In my daily life though flamboyance is not so appropriate, so it's all about finding a balance between function and decoration.
choose one item in your closet that you feel completely expresses your personal style and/or aesthetic. describe it. what is it and why is it "you"?
That's tough to say- my style varies so much. I suppose one of my outfits last week, a blue dress with a striped sash, was quite typical. It had subtle colors, a bit of old-timey influence in wearing the sash, and was quite youthful (although it feels strange to say so of myself).
do you collect anything? if so, what?
Bottlecaps, and tights. I think I have over twenty pairs.
what are some of your favorite places to shop when you want to add to your wardrobe? online? locally? anywhere in the world? why are these places favorites of yours?
I do most of my shopping in Hong Kong when we return every other year. The choice there is much (much, much) larger than here, no one here will have the same things or even the same style of things and the prices are much better. That's why Hong Kong is the best! For the most part I only buy winter things like shoes and tights here. And of course my mother's closet is a major clothes source for me.
does your location (where you live) affect your style? if so, in what ways? describe what your city is like in regard to fashion.
Not really, except in terms of weather. There is no dominant fashion 'type' besides the usual generic trends, but I'm happy if I see someone wear a color that suits them or just looking good. I don't need to be in any fashion capital.
what do you think is next in terms of fashion? perhaps something that is currently flying under the radar, but could be really cool an popular later, or perhaps something amazing you'd like to see more of that needs to come back or be the new thing?
Recently I've noticed that catwalk trends from 1997 seems to be back again (for instance: yellow and black, space age, and 60s silhouettes). So I suggest we look at 1998 for what's next, haha. Beware, sugarplum styles could make a comeback! Personally I've seen knitted/crochet shorts here and there on the runway these past few seasons- they may not become a big trend but they are very special.
you are super creative with your clothes! share a creative tip or idea about a way people can remix/style their clothing in a fun or innovative way.
Throw all your clothes in a big pile and find things that go together which you could never have imagined before (that's how I do it!). Invest in color, too. It makes you feel good.
style icons: do you have any?
Charlotte Hatherley, because her style and her attitude are one and the same.
how did you come across wardrobe_remix? why do you post there? What do you like about it? has anything positive come about for you as a result of posting to the community?
I came across it by browsing flickr for fashion photos, I think. I post because everyone is so positive in their comments, and that's what I like about it. The positive thing is that I get a lot of ideas there, have a lot of fun, and meet all these great people who are part of wardrobe_remix!
other favorite wardrobe_remix(ers)? who, and why?
le-chat-la-la~, nemrešpobjećodnedjelje, and humblechan come to mind- they really have their own style and always look cool. and everyone else, of course.

THE WARDROBE_REMIX(ER) BEING REVEALED:
name: Beth Jones flickr handle: TheVintageSocietyGirl age: 26 location: Orange County, CA website: http://www.thevintagesociety.blogspot.com other important basic details about yourself that you'd like to reveal: Married to the best man ever!
DEEP(ER) QUESTIONS:
what do you do for a living? or, if you are a student, what are you studying?
Well, I am in the process of opening a vintage clothing store. At the current time I have a 9 to 5 to pay the bills and save money for the store. All of my focus, time and energy is being put into the store right now. We will be opening April 2008!
what are your passions/obsessions?
Creative inspired fashion. Not the typical, take it off the mannequin and wear it fashion, but one that takes a process of hunting for the unique and wearing it with flare!
My store is a definite obsession right now. I lay in bed at night, my mind racing with ideas and goals for the store. I want my store to be an experience that girls can’t get enough of and continue to return week after week.
I have so many aspirations for the store. Eventually I would like to be doing personal and professional styling. Working with individuals to develop their own unique “style statement” and working with photographers on fashion shoots.
what inspires you?
I’d say the two biggest inspirations for me would be people and places. I am absolutely inspired by people around me. That is why I love what Tricia developed with wardrobe_remix! We are all part of this big melting pot and everyone’s ideas are so unusual. I love seeing how individuals wear things so differently. One item can be worn in so many ways and I love to see how creative minds work.
I love traveling and have been blessed to have many opportunities to see the county we live in and the world outside of it. Seeing cities around the world, the art, architecture and cultures all inspire me to new levels of my own sense of style.
how do you define "style"?
For me style can mean so many things. In terms of clothes, I wouldn’t say it is limited to a certain look or even something that you always call beautiful. I would say style is something that catches your eye. A woman or man walks in a room and they attract your attention. You may not even be able to describe it but you can’t take your eyes off of them.
how would you describe your personal style?
I would say I am “vintage glamour”. I don’t know if it is having blond hair and the Marilyn Monroe body type but I just love that glamorous look. I find that I don’t usually layer my outfits with many features; I usually like to find one eye-catching piece and then simply build around that.
how does your background (personal history, passions, culture, nationality, etc.) come through in the clothes you like and wear, if at all?
Well, I come from the South (South Carolina to be exact), and now live in California. Both have had huge influences on me and my style. I think I developed a love for the old historic places in the South which brought out an appreciation of the distinctive and gave me an eye for beauty. But it has been the freedom of expression in California that has allowed me to really dive into my love of clothes and the eccentricity of fashion.
choose one item in your closet that you feel completely expresses your personal style and/or aesthetic. describe it. what is it and why is it "you"?
I just wore this dress and I feel that it embodies the “vintage glam girl” that I am. It is a beautiful cream 70’s disco dress that it body forming and very Marilyn Monroe. I felt like a women who could take on anything in that dress. I love to wear dresses and this one is probably one of my all time favorites. I definitely can’t wear it all the time, but if anything is vintage glamour this dress is it!

Weekend in the Life of a Bridesmaid

do you collect anything? if so, what?
I have gotten really in to finding great old hats: cocktail hats, turbans, floppy grandma hats. They are always a fun addition to any outfit.
what are some of your favorite places to shop when you want to add to your wardrobe? online? locally? anywhere in the world? why are these places favorites of yours?
Favorite places to shop – SAVERS thrift store would have to be my all time favorite thrift hunting ground. They always have great finds you just have to keep an hour or more open to find the good stuff.
Estate and Garage Sales are another favorite – those are just trial and error on finding hidden treasures.
Chain Stores- Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Crossroads Trading Co., and H&M
Flea Markets – Melrose Trading Post in Hollywood, CA.
does your location (where you live) affect your style? if so, in what ways? describe what your city is like in regard to fashion.
California has definitely influenced my style. The freedom here to wear anything has greatly affected me. There is a casual factor that most people lean towards here maybe because of the beach and surf scene, but I to lean more towards the dramatic and dressed up look.
California also has so many different vibes – Hollywood, beach cities like Laguna and Ventura, the desert, and snow covered mountains. Each one with its own style and each one inspires me.
what do you think is next in terms of fashion? perhaps something that is currently flying under the radar, but could be really cool an popular later, or perhaps something amazing you'd like to see more of that needs to come back or be the new thing?
Bow ties! Last year a read an article about a designer that is doing a whole line of bow ties and ties for women that were girly and so much fun. I think that would be a great item to really resurrect.
you are super creative with your clothes! share a creative tip or idea about a way people can remix/style their clothing in a fun or innovative way.
Use wardrobe_remix to your advantage. Really observe your style as you document it and figure out what really looks good on you and what you love the most.
Don’t be afraid to step outside of what “celebrity fashion” dictates. Figure out who you are and be your own style icon!
Creative Tip – A unique accessory can make an outfit interesting. A head wrap, hat, necklace, shoes, etc can make something basic really POP!
style icons: do you have any?
#1 STYLE ICON OF ALL TIME FOR ME!: Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City.
Others: Chloe Sevigny, Ashley Olsen, Jenny Lewis, Carmen Hawk
how did you come across wardrobe_remix? why do you post there? What do you like about it? has anything positive come about for you as a result of posting to the community?
I think I found out about wardrobe_remix on some fashion blog, and I am not sure which one. I love posting here mainly because of the influence it has on me. I know it is weird, but I have developed my style 10x more by seeing myself and seeing others style. I have learned what looks good on me and have also learned to not just follow certain trends because they are in...but really what works for me and on me.
Many positive things have come from being part of this community: An article in NEET Magazine, the development of my blog (www.thevintagesociety.blogspot.com), a lot of exposure for me store, some styling opportunities, etc. It has been amazing. Thanks Tricia!
other favorite wardrobe_remix(ers)? who, and why?
lebonbonmulticolore, liebemarlene , bitsandbobbins and boboniaa are probably my favorites. They each are very individual and bring different things to the table.
lebonbonmulticolore – I love her combination of clothing. She is great with layering pieces! liebemarlene – always has great vintage finds bitsandbobbins – the amazing creator of wardrobe_remix and is a color genius! [ed: thanks! heh.] boboniaa – has such a casual cool sense of style that looks effortless.
